It’s common for ag employers to detail how they provide charity gifts to their workers, or “treat them like family” as an argument for why they don’t want us to have equal rights. It’s a trope with a rich history.

Is anyone else in Oregon tired of the back patting? After two years of ignoring the Governor’s abuse of power and the harms caused by it I have a hard time getting excited about and their excitement in passing bills most of us never asked for nor wanted.

The measure granting farmworkers in Oregon the ability to earn overtime if they work more than 40 hours in a week has passed the Senate. It will now go to Gov. Kate Brown, who is expected to sign it into law. Oregon joins WA and CA in offering OT to farmworkers.

“I deserve equality. Farm workers like me deserve overtime just like everyone else,” testified one OR farm worker in support of HB4002. “Growers shouldn’t have unlimited access to use us up. We are human beings. We are not tools or livestock. We deserve equal treatment.”

Overtime with farmworkers at 40 hours is just a matter of time - this is just the right thing to do. Legislators have been working on this bill for years, including workgroups and hearings. It's time to end this racist exclusion and pass overtime for farmworkers.

For those of my friends involved in Oregon politics, is today our version of Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras, or Ash Wednesday? (For those outside the game, today is the last day to file for our 2022 Primary Election.)

I just tried to watch a video of the people fixing a law about farmworkers, but it was just a man talking about the carpet while crying? I am sincerely so baffled

And another victory for our community! 🎉🎉🎉Thank you to the Oregon lawmakers who fought tirelessly for and to the hundreds of Oregonians who testified in support of farm workers.

WE DID IT! 🎉 This is a big moment for Oregon. SB 1510 will reduce unnecessary interactions with law enforcement, improve success for people on probation and parole, and fund services that reduce racial disparities prevalent in Oregon’s criminal justice system.
