How to allocate a carbon budget to countries when emissions can be negative? In this presentation at we explore this question. 1/ We split positive and negative emissions and consider them separately (here from the MESSAGE model). 1.5C scenario.

  13. On negative emissions: a while ago I calculated that afforestation in some areas has an overall *warming* effect because decreased surface albedo (darkening the land) has a greater impact on global radiative forcing than the carbon sequestration

IAM community has come under criticism for overoptimistic feasibility assessments, e.g. regarding deployment of CO2 removal. In IAM literatue, there are now more cautious reflections on IAM vs real-world feasibility, e.g. in Rogelj et al. on RCP1.9

Worth looking at for tweets from last week’s conference. Barry McMullin was there giving 2 papers for the IE-NETS project (funded by ). Here are the two posters for our presentations on Ireland’s remaining CO2 quota & technical negative emissions potential.

-Use of biomass alone can allow for CO2 emissions mitigation. Adding carbon capture and storage maximises the CO2 abatement potential of biomass, says at conference

Panel discussing modelling and policy incentives - does negative emissions in models explain the lack of action on climate change? Not so, say modellers, but IAMs will not do anything to shift us from the path we are on, argues James Hansen.

on the need for discussion of feasibility of decarbonisation pathways from integrated assessment models. Without that, we risk giving the impression that we are on track. Alternative metrics needed for tracking progress.
