    After more than 8 months in hospital care, and dodging death many times, Toiroa is doing well. We'll be delighted to have her back on Whenua Hou. Great pic by Lydia Uddstrom of her eating kawakawa - not on the menu in southern NZ!

    Newly-named Toiroa (formerly Esperance-2-B-19) has been at since May last year. We removed her from the nest with respiratory issues (see video), and she was diagnosed with aspergillosis.

    Another hatched in 2019 has been named, by the team at who have looked after her for most of her life. We never expected Toiroa ("Survivor") to live this long. A huge thanks to all who have helped keep her alive.

    There are currently 3 missing on Whenua Hou, and 2 on Anchor, all likely with failed or dropped transmitters. The 3 on WH are all this year's juveniles - including Mati-Ma.

    Last week dog team James & Peg spent a week on Whenua Hou looking for three missing - including Tumanako. Plenty of birds found - just not the missing ones!

    Alice-3-A-19 was released 10 days ago on Whenua Hou, where the team are working hard to monitor all these juv . They normally lose weight after captivity, but we need to be vigilant against the threat of aspergillosis. Pic: Brodie Philp

    RT   Troubled times for everyone involved with , as we try to understand what's caused the recent spate of aspergillosis in chicks and adults. Yesterday we caught Huhana for blood tests.

    We’re celebrating these recent kākāpō successes! 🐣 Mik and Breeze from our vet team sent us these from Whenua Hou. So far 77 healthy chicks have hatched this year alone – outstanding work from everyone involved! 💚
