Funding for a lot of our research comes from doing TV commercials 20 miles up. Here's some pics from one we did for KLM Airlines.

High Altitude propeller testing on Away 22. To give you an idea of scale, the propeller is six feet tip to tip. This flight was back in 2003. We tested the propeller at 80,000 feet and it worked great.

While doing serious research you need to have fun too. If you look to the upper right side of the vehicle you can see Lego X-wing & Tie fighters. We mounted them on wires attached to a servo. They chased each other from launch to landing.

Even after the brave X-wing pilot dispatched the Tie fighter she still had to weave past space monsters.

When the balloon burst on Away 51 a chunk of the balloon wrapped around a fin. It looks to me like a lion roaring at the Earth. What does it look like to you?

Working on airships can be a surreal experience. Here's Kevin inside the Ascender 9 envelope.

This one landed with 50 feet of the lake. From the view on the map we thought we were going to need to swim for it.

Launching a heavy. Here is the double balloon Away 27 lifting off from the Black Rock desert. in 2006. It was carrying 600 PongSat student experiments.

Time for the way-back machine: A very early test vehicle (Ascender 18) being flown back and forth in the horse corral in 2003.

The Dark Sky Station has even made it into an epic comic book! This is a page out of 'Escape from Terra'.

It's 1am and time for the pre mission team meeting. The shocking thing is that Bruno actually opened the restaurant up just to feed the team.

We got the new hatch hinges mounted on Belle. The hatch has changed from a two person wrestling match to an easy one hand lift. Still a bit of trimming and adjusting to go.

Duel launches look great and they make recovery easier. The vehicle tend to land within a few miles of each other. This fall we're bumping up to three at a time.
