  1. Here's a remarkable animation of , which may be our second known interstellar visitor, taken by astronomer Gennady Borisov - who discovered the object. 2l/Borisov, perhaps? (source: )

How can we tie together our understanding of ISOs like and with disks+exoplanet statistics? If 'Oumuamua came from a DSHARP-like disk (below), we should be seeing a lot more ISOs in the coming years -- read all about it in my new Letter:

Another confirmed object also known as spotted by an independent Gennady Borisov. More detail here:

  5. First water on an planet in the habitable zone. Now an interstellar comet. What a week for astronomy. And what a time to be alive!

New Comet C/2019 Q4 (Borisov) (of possible interstellar origin; see previous tweet) just imaged (with the comet +25 degree on the horizon and the Sun -16 degree). Stacking of 13 unfiltered exposures, 90 seconds each with a 0.25-m f/3.4 reflector + CCD

Whoever came up with this is a genius.

There it is. Interstellar suspect is now C/2019 Q4 Borisov. There was some confusion earlier today as to which new object was being referenced. It does indeed have an eccentricity greater than 1.0 (3.5). One to watch, too bad its soooo faint.

is now recognized as a hyperbolic comet called C/2019 Q4. /2019Q$ Here is a simulation of its hyperbolic trajectory through our solar system. It will run in your browser.

MPEC is out for new comet C/2019 Q4 (Borisov). Based on available obs the orbit solution converged to hyperbolic elements that would indicate an interstellar origin. More obs are very desiderable. Congrats to Gennadii V. Borisov for this discovery

Alright, after fixing a few things in my code to more properly handle hyperbolic orbits, I now get for potential interstellar object an eccentricity of ~3.0, in line with other estimates. That means a solar system approach velocity of ~30 km/s!

Lost of discussion about whether this new object is an asteroid or another interstellar object passing through our Solar System like 'Oumuamua did in 2017 Excited to see more and more observations roll in over the next few weeks to try and pin this down 🤓👏

: A Thread: I am doing (initial) orbit determinations of minor bodies since about 20 years. I may call myself a pupil of Brian G. Marsden, who always was conservative with initial orbits and assumed e=1 for comets when the nominal solutions were +-5% around 1. 1/10

An amateur Ukranian astronomer has discovered what could be another interstellar object (like 'Oumuamua) on a hyperbolic trajectory through our solar system. is ~10km across and will come as close as 1.86 AU to Earth in December.

From the available data there are indications is an Interstellar object but much more observations are required to confirm it. I've got my fingers crossed astronomically speaking. I've got all my doings crossed unastronomically speaking 😉
