#ethicalCS Thanks for inviting me Saber! These chats have been a big influence on my studies and it's always great to see what others are thinking about

Yet it is the currency with which platforms build their user base

#ethicalCS Identity is something that internet platforms have struggled with since it's creation because of a tension between anonymity and accountability, but it has also done a lot of good re: providing a space for marginalized communities to gather online and uplift each otherPrikaži ovu nit -
#ethicalCS When tech isn't designed with those most vulnerable to prejudice in mind, it benefits those with power or influence already. Making tech isn't used to marginalize others is a difficult battle that needs societal conversations, not more patches or redesigns https://twitter.com/ed_saber/status/1222695807679442946 …Prikaži ovu nit -
Hard to implement in geographies that don't use CCs, or where persistent psuedonyms are important for safety, etc. It's a good idea, but not entirely generalizable.

I love that. Tech companies and journalists should have an obligation to remain unbiased in political processes, providing their users with facts and evidence rather than opinions.

#ethicalCS I don't think there's an easy 280 character answer, but consistently funded education on subjects like media literacy and now algorithmic literacy are vital https://twitter.com/ed_saber/status/1222692177152823296 … -
A3: Instagram's new implementation of fact-check is interesting and could help if used properly. I'm not saying Google should manipulate search results based on fact-checking, but disclaimers about "fake news" wouldn't hurt.

this is a big question. FCC and FTC should do more. but yes overall gov should do more than what's happening right now.

Yeah, it's an unsolved problem, as far as I know. It's a really good one, though, and you're right to raise it early in the conversation

Honestly? I don't really know how we can without some third-party oversight. Google's already being sued for blocking a candidate's access to their ad campaign after a debate. It's even harder for voters to see or combat microtargeting.

#ethicalCS I first got interested in technology and society through watching Youtube. During my undergrad I've taken courses on digital media studies from fine arts, english & anthropology. I'm a believer in teaching tech design within a broader techno-socio contextPrikaži ovu nit -
And for all the worries about abuse of social media by trolls and bots, it's an incredibly powerful way for people normally removed from political debate to have their voices heard.

#ethicalCS Q1) I'm Ethan Zuckerman, and I direct the Center for Civic Media (@civicMIT) at@MIT. Much of my research focuses on how individuals and organizations use participatory media for social change, an issue that's fraught with ethical concerns.Prikaži ovu nit -
