Q1. When it comes to publicity permission, does a teacher have the right to share photos of Ss and their work on their own personal social media accounts?

Good morning and welcome to this
@eduLWDT slow-chat.
We’re going to discuss whether a teacher has the right to publish photos of students and their work online. So, do they?

Welcome to our first
#eduLWDT slow-chat of the new year and decade. This week, join@robkellytweets to discuss a teacher’s right to publish photos of their students and their work online. Do teachers have the right? What do you think?pic.twitter.com/SvJaOBn43F

I know Lucas.
It seems like common sense to us, yet it's not even on some teacher's or school's radar. It's particularly bad over on @instagram.

I do, too. I know of a number of international schools and a few local private schools that allow this, also.

Now this raises another good question Dan because what if I'm not there to do it? What if the password to a blog, social account or website has been forgotten, lost or held with someone else? Who should be responsible? The organisation? The individual?

That's how we work
@berwicklodgeps, too. If it's on the official channels and permission has been granted by a guardian, then I'm fine with that. It does make me wonder if a student will ever return to the school in years to come asking me to remove one.

Thanks for joining the
#eduLWDT chat this week Kim.
I try and avoid it myself, even with publicity permission. -
Great reply Emily and one we agree with 100%.

Hazel, many thanks for joining in on the
#eduLWDT chat this week.
You're so right. Before the internet was around to market books, were photos of students used in magazines or local newspapers for book launches or school visits without written permission from guardians?

As a parent, I enjoy seeing my children’s and the work of their peers online. No names/faces should be used unless permission is given.

I think posting school work online is fine as long as it’s de-identified and with student permission. Posting photos of students makes me nervous so I just avoid it

2/2. As for students photos, I don't publish faces unless I have parent permission. If it's a school site then it's different because those Ss will usually have media permission from when they enrolled.
#eduLWDT -
1/2 I think it's ok to show students work providing your clear that it's your students. Maybe shared in the context of what the learning activity was to benefit other teachers. My students love when I share their work online.

Fantastic to be back Dan.
