“I’ve always gotten along with people of your race, ask joe here” “I’m not negro I’m Spanish” the first quote is an exemplar of tokenism: I have one black friend so I’m not racist. The second is Jeff’s failed attempt to be slightly more white passing.

After Jeff tells the police officer that he has shoes in his bag, the officer replies, “whose?” An implication that all African Americans steal, especially when seen with expensive or well kept items.

Again with the food stereotypes saying they are having “black eyed peas, hominy grits, cornbread, ham hocks” for dinner after his kids ask.

The contrast between when Jeff is at the beauty salon versus at home speaking to his children is interesting. At the salon, in pursuit of being lighter he grabs “beautiful bleach,” but at home his kids describe his dark skin as “dirty.”

The new lights and music and Jeff’s little tantrum also mark a new level of emotionality in this movie, which I think is the beginning of Althea seeing Jeff as an ‘other’. In any case it prompts her to say, “I’m not sure all this (1/2)

While they try to whiten Jeff’s skin, Jeff and Althea have the following exchange: “Any change yet?” “Don’t be so militant, I wouldn’t expect it to be immediate. I mean, I don’t think any intelligent negro would expect it to be immediate–“(1/2)

The dialogue overall, particularly in the first third or so, seems very vaudeville-y to me: it’s quick, over-the-top, bizarre, and slightly antiquated (“good show, good show”). Jeff’s lines have kind of a racist Marx Brothers flavor.

“Muhammad Ali”, calling it “a credit to [its] race.” He sings “Camptown Races” on the bus. I think the first thing he does that doesn’t touch race is call the secretaries “sluts”. What a prince. (2/2)

From the first time we meet him, as a white dude, Jeff’s dialogue is radicalized to a comic extreme. The first thing he does in the morning is punch a bag labeled “killer” while singing “Jimmy Crack Corn” (a slave song). He addresses the punching bag as (1/?)

Totally agree (and yeah great choice of words). And the same kind of fetishization/dehumanization comes up again later on when Jeff sleeps with Erika, and she goes on about how “negroes have beautiful bodies” because “all those beautiful muscles work (1/2)

It’s interesting how Althea pretends to be concerned with civil rights issues; but when she sees Jeff for the first time as a black man, she screams “he’ll kill us” and later asks “should I hide the money?” Her words reveal that she harbors racist opinions too
