    This about sums up my situation right now

    Academia as third shift: You spend all your day performing administrative work, go home and take care of your non-work responsibilities such as housework or care-work, and after 9PM you start doing the work that your performance is actually assessed on.

    Literally just spent 90 mins on the agenda for our first dept meeting (tracking down information, organizing materials, general weeping, etc). People think being a dept head is all glamour and power, and they are RIGHT!

    First day back at the office after two weeks of vacation. I made it until 12:20 pm before I was hit by a huge wave of dept head-related anxiety. For me that is pretty good!

    Assuming that senior faculty are taking on more of the university’s collegial and other service roles, lower publishing rates should be expected. (Personally, I have found I don’t publish at the same rate now that I am dept head!)

    There is a general assumption that faculty publish less over time. This is probably true, since they are expected to contribute in other ways. But evidence suggests that the decline might not be as big as assumed, and there is a lot of variation. (link: )

    A challenge/request for all department chairs, senior/mid-career faculty, and PhD supervisors: personally speak to at least one student or faculty member this week about work-life balance, wellbeing, and self care.

    How to stop normalizing academic overwork: 1. Speak explicitly to students & junior faculty about the importance of work-life balance. 2. Role model work-life balance. 3. Limit email to M-F work hours. 4. Assign reasonable workloads.

    I was feeling badly that my coauthor is so far ahead of me on our writing schedule and then I remembered that this past term I had my usual dept chair, teaching and research workload and he was on sabbatical. Comparison is the thief of joy.
