Surreal moment sitting at the conference listening to Dr He explaining his research - very concerning! There are SO many unanswered questions - scientific, ethical, moral, future care, implications. Read this great threat for intelligent summary

1/ Here covers a lot of ground on the story, much of which I agree with but… “the technology is changing so quickly that many scientists are taking a “if I don’t do it, someone else will” attitude.”

/grumble As a microbiomeist (but not working on autism research) the prospect of studying microbial cause (or effect) is exciting, but I am wary of jumping the gun, as has shown us. We study outcomes and assume that averting microbial outcome averts condition, but...

Struggling to sleep so decided to read into more of the situation. The experimental rigour was flawed in virtually every aspect. One of the implanted embryos had an in-frame indel of 15 nt. how on earth can He claim that the receptor is no longer functional?

I agree, his invite should have been revoked, and the statement from conference organizers was very mild considering that was unnecessary to prevent girls being born HIV free

Using the episode to make an experimental design point, about System Validation. If the goal is to knock out CCR5, there was no validation of the in-frame deletion. You need to validate the consequence is as intended before you start an experiment, or a human life.

Two things that shock me about the CCR5 1) prenatal transmission of HIV is nonexistent if breastfeeding is avoided 2-4 weeks after birth and antiretrovirals are administered 2) the CCR5 mutation confers you greater susceptibility to West Nile Virus.

  11. Got a chance to attend with my research student the second human genome editing summit in Hong Kong by serendipity and to witness this once in a lifetime talk on the highly controversial world first CRISPR baby!

Outstanding thread on what was done in the trial and the discussion with JK at the . I'm sad that JK went through with his plans, despite many voices trying to dissuade him. I hope the parents and twins get medical and emotional support they will need!

Very informative (and worrying!) thread covering the science, process and ethic procedures (or lack thereof).

In essence, kids are being used as test subjects for undetermined protein mutants of CCR5. What ever way you cut this, it stinks.

  16. Update on the phenomena: He Jiankui and two colleagues (embryologists) sentenced to three years in prison and a $425K fine for deliberately injecting into viable human embryos.

Perhaps the high water mark for my Twitter existence is coming up with ‘Baby Crisperer’ - a shout out to for taking it into print ;)

  20. story continues... CCR5 gene edits could affect a range of traits.
