    After two weeks in the worlds most perfect Bornean forest, we drove 2 days through this. Desert. Open cast mines. Oil palm plantations. 🌱 Borneo’s precious jungle is on borrowed time. 🌱

    Rakiura's three chicks are getting big - and agile! It's a huge nest, so we put barriers at the back to stop the chicks wandering too far. There's a big variation in nest size: several are too small, but some are perhaps a bit too big!

    The older chicks will soon be leaving the nest, but they won't be counted as part of the population until they're ~double the age at 150 days old. There's a long way to go...

    The first chick has fledged on Whenua Hou: Nora-1-A-19 has left Huhana's nest. This was a hand-reared chick put into the nest very late, and we nearly 'pulled' it several times, so a great result.

    Today the last 6 hand-reared chicks were flown from Invercargill to Whenua Hou. They'll spend about a month in a weaning pen, learning how to eat and live in the wild.

    The chicks close to fledging are getting more curious about their surroundings - like Bella-2-A-19. When they leave the nest, we'll check on them every 2 days. They can get themselves into trouble (stuck up trees etc)

    As conservationists we work hard to think of the population, and not the individual. But when it’s an individual as unique as Hoki, the first hand-reared , it’s hard. Everyone who met her never will never forget her.

    As the chicks in the nests get closer to fledging, we put transmitters on so we can find them outside the nest. We've never had 3-chick nests before, so don't know how they'll disperse.

    The first cohort of chicks will be fledging in the next few weeks. Bella-2-A, Nora-2-A, Atareta-3-A in Aranga's nest on Whenua Hou tonight.

    Sawfish ARE still present in ! Photos of an adult largetooth captured in the northwest on 17th April 2019. Poverty in coastal communities means fishers are unlikely to release them alive. We need creative approaches to at level.
