A4: My husband and I have been married 19 years and mainly express our love through snark... as evidenced by the cake he made me a few years back. So I could really take or leave romantic elements in a story. But give me ALL the banter.

A3: The hardest part of adding romantic arcs to my middle grade stories are making sure the feelings present as both real and valid. Romantic love is quashed a lot in MG, but I was in 5th/6th grade when I first started to explore my sexuality.

A1: I have lots of different love stories in my debut, grandparent love, sister love and first crushes. Pretty much the whole thing in full of LOVE

A2: Love is SO complicated, especially the love between a parent and a child with anxiety. The smallest actions can make the child feel unloved, so in HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS THE SEA, I made sure to show those nuances.

Sorry I’m late!! My scheduled tweet time zone was messed up... but Kate, the author of THE LONELY HEART OF MAYBELLE LANE, an MG contemporary about a girl who collects sounds, has panic attacks, and loves the color purple. If you want a real summary, click below!

Q3: One of the hardest things about adding a love arc is writing it while knowing you are setting up the strong possibility of a broken heart for your character.
We can get attached to our characters! #Class2K20Chat https://twitter.com/thebookbratz/status/1223794415149506562 …

If you are working within a constrained time period, I think it's hard to make sure that the love unfurls believably and doesn't feel too much like "insta-love." Also making sure that it's interwoven with the overall growth of your characters.

Olivia HATES the “apparently plain, ordinary girl won’t believe she’s beautiful until a slightly older, mysterious, masculine guy tells her” and the “perfect” first kiss if it lacks consent. Tay hates love stories involving betrayal and emotional manipulation.

A6: I'm a huge enemies-to-lovers/slow burn fan, but personally I'm honestly not a huge fan of love triangles! There's nothing wrong with them -- I just always end up being super antsy wanting one of the couples to get together and stay together!!

A3. The right balance of the narrative without compromising the development of the characters and without detracting from the plot.

A5: There are so many amazing love stories in books! Some of my favorites include SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIEN AGENDA, TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE and OPPOSITE OF ALWAYS.

A5:
#Class2K20Chat In the spirit of BY THE BOOK, I'll keep it classic and say my favorite love story is the second-chance romance of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in PERSUASION. -
A5: I adored THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY and have watched the Netflix movie like five times. And I enjoy a whiff of the tragic, so one of my favorite love stories I’ve read in recent years is THE SONG OF ACHILLES.

A4: I love romance elements when I read. It’s the thrill of experiencing love without the real life drama/consequences.

A4: As a middle grade author, most of what I read for both work & pleasure is middle grade, which means I don't see too much romance unfortunately. But I am ALWAYS a sucker for a good romance in books!

A4: I definitely enjoy stories with romantic elements, but it's not a requirement for me! Since I read a ton of middle grade these days, I'm more interested in other kinds of relationships in books.

I loooove romance and have since I was a teen. I used to scan the books I read looking for kissing scenes
