It's great to be back in getting this common garden started! If I can get these seedlings and cuttings to grow, the fun part will be introducing Azteca ant colonies this summer 🐜🐜🐜

  4. Fuzzy Wuzzy was a moth! Today, a male (male = feathery antennae) emerged from a cocoon on my garage door frame. It’s been years since I reared these by the 100s on box elder trees. If this is a real wild male, it’s an unusual & welcome visitor!

"The ants protect the tree" is the third video short in our upcoming exhibit. Azteca ants nip at the legs of would-be herbivores to scare them off their hometree. Occasionally the ants capture the intruders and devour them.

"The tree feeds the ants" is the second video short for our upcoming exhibit. Cecropia plants pump out pearly oval Müllerian food bodies rich in glycogen at the base of each giant leaf petiole that the ants keenly harvest.

Here's another look at the beautiful moth that visited us this morning at the DNR's St. Paul office. Our resident entomologist tells us cecropias can have a wing span up to 7 inches, and males can fly up to 25 miles to mate. This one likely just emerged from its cocoon.

  14. After mating, the female moth will lay more than 200 eggs in small batches. These moths cannot eat; they live less than 2 weeks.

  15. Cecropia Moths - it took about 20 minutes after the female emerged from the brown cocoon for the male to find her (pheromones) & mate!

  16. This Cecropia moth is just drying off after leaving its cocoon (you can see a little of the brown, papery cocoon on the upper left of picture)

Sharing my favourite Cecropia pic again. It’s at the Princess of Wales Conservatory in Kew Gardens. It’s a fast growing plant but a lesson that you should always look up, for a different view of plants! ⠀⠀

Cecropia fruit jackpot! Getting ready to plant and grow thousands of trees for experiments, husbandry, and exhibits. One fruit can yield a thousand trees. Not a bad snack either - a seedy, subtle combination of banana and mulberry.

  20. Happy ! The cecropia caterpillars in our Touch & See Lab are busy getting their nom on 🐛. Some caterpillars can eat 27,000x their own weight as they grow!
