  1. Unsurprisingly Orkney is full of gems. Here is the stunning purple hued gravemarker of Euphemia Bailie, wife of Peter Vellian, who sadly died at the tender age of 13, and is buried here with her children. Probably died in childbirth?

Tomorrow we’re off to start a new project. We’re surveying a cemetery. At a place which happens to be called Bloody Point. On Hallowe’en. Wasn’t really planned, the timings just coincided. (I wonder what extra equipment should we take with us?)

  7. Hello Twitter hive mind. Editing images from Orkney and found a stunning Johnstone/Johnson clan grave marker in Orphir. Could I just ask, do you think the symbolism is meant to represent a phoenix? I don't have access to my heraldry books at present. Cheers!

It is likely that these 'Dødehusene' were important places for rituals and funerary performances connected to not only honouring the dead and ensuring appropriate burial, but also in aiding the transition from biological death to social death! 3/

‘Neil Wilkin () hopes the poems will show the human, emotional side of the people living in prehistoric Britain, and engender a connection with other humans across time and space. “Burial allows individuals in the past to be known,” he says.’
