    Our garden fence is now over 15 years old, and mosses are beginning to colonise and spread

    Wooden fence of style typical in UK. Upright planks with small overlap and strengthening horizontal batten. The horizontal surface has a growing cushion of moss.

    Another gemmiferous spotted in Edinburgh yesterday was this Orthotrichum lyellii (Lyell's Bristle-moss), growing on a Pear tree amongst other epiphytic Orthotrichums.

    Bryophytes are great, but they're even better when they come with gemmae. These Syntrichia papillosa (Marble Screw-Moss) were growing on Crack Willow and Sycamore yesterday in Edinburgh. Gemma-tastic!

    More fascinating species found on a cold windy session on yesterday Marchandiomyces aurantiacus, Metzgeria furcata (Forked Veilwort) - seems to be a good year for this common & Lophocolea bidentata (Bifid Crestwort) another common species

    Saw a rambling stone wall on our walk at which was covered in frost etched . First pic, Bryum capillare (I think). Atop the wall a handsome Haircap, Polytrichum sp. and bottom left Pixie cup lichen, Cladonia sp.

    The fabulous rich beetroot tones of a large patch of mature Sphagnum magellanicum moss. It's glorious 😀
