    2/2 The turtle was quite afraid of me & when I picked it up to move it off the road, legs kicking, it peed all over my sandaled foot. A small inconvenience for a safe, endangered turtle. But good to know. Watch out for turtle pee. Pioneer Press pic.

    Yesterday around dusk I saw a shape on the road that looked like a rock or pothole, but it was a young blandings turtle. I stopped and picked it up by the shell to move it across the road when I learned a precaution of moving turtles 1/2 ...

    to all the dads out there! This large male is old enough where his annuli, rings of scutes, have become smooth (estimated over 20 years old), where as the juvenile was estimated to be about 2 years old!

    -- Here we have a pair of adult Blanding's turtles (emydoidea blandingii), one of each sex. Can you tell which one is male and which one is female?

    laying eggs 🐢🥚. Mama turtles risk a lot for their little turts, leaving the wetland and braving roads, predators, etc. This one made it. Here’s to hoping she makes it back to the wetland and her mini turts do the same in ~2 months without getting munched on.

    -- A unique sighting of a hypomelanistic Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii), meaning this animal has a reduced amount of pigmentation. An albino turtle on the other hand, would have a lack of pigmentation all together.

    Here's what a typical blanding's field work set-up looks like! You never know where you might find a turtle and have to collect samples. Sometimes you're on a partially submerged log, while others in a mosquito-filled forest.
