Today's best moment was meeting a pair of Spotted Quail-thrush while out walking. These are shy birds, hard to get a clear photo - always running behind tussocks & logs. Male has the black throat.

An intricately patterned bird walks on the ground among twigs, leaf litter and grass tussocks. It has spots on its flanks, a grey chest outlined in black, long white eyebrow, white cheek and black face and throat. Its head is raised attentively.
Looking through a jumble of grasses, leaves and branches we see the head and upper body of a watchful bird peering back at us. It has a large, bright eye, pale eyebrow, red cheek, brown back with black spots, and small white spots on the wing.

Eastern Rosella yesterday trying to excavate a hollow in the brickwork of the old blast furnace ruins, while her mate patiently waits. I think he'll be waiting for a long time 😖 Clearly there aren't enough hollow trees available.

A colourful rosella clings to an old brick wall, bracing its long blue tail against the bricks. Its head is in a small hole in the brickwork as it tries to excavate a larger hollow.

An Eastern Rosella sits on a narrow ledge on an old brick wall. His bright red, yellow, blue and green plumage contrasts starkly with the grimy bricks.

It's not always easy to see the eponymous fleshy ornamentation of the Purple-gaped Honeyeater (Lichenostomus cratitius), but at the right angle it's spectacularly distinctive! 💜

The Superb Fairy-wrens are currently nest-building in my mother's retirement village. Well, the female is. The male just sits there looking all shiny and blue. To be fair, he will help feed the young.

A male Superb Fairy-wren sits facing us on a fence wire, his head turned cutely to the side. This tiny bird has a black throat and shiny blue forehead, cheeks and back. His long tail is mostly hidden behind him.

Winter is coming...and if you're gathering firewood spare a thought for the beautiful, shy Spotted Quail-thrush who needs plenty of fallen timber for foraging amongst.
