Three new books by
#autistic authors challenge the narrative that autistic people need to be cured. (I've read@EricMGarcia's "We're Not Broken" and@JoanneLimburg's "Letters to My Weird Sisters," and both are A+).https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/jun/27/we-dont-need-to-be-cured-or-fixed-writers-speak-out-on-autism … -
My work appraisal today was one big love letter to my
#autistic traits! I was praised for my attention to detail, calmness (i.e soft voice and lack of facial expression), efficiency (hyperfocus), logic, organisation (ordering), technical ability, kindness (empathy) & more. -

This drawing was done by my oldest son, who is
#autistic and#speechdelayed. When I asked him what this drawing was of though, he said, “It’s me as flying as a superhero saving people. Don’t worry mommy! I’ll always protect you.” This is now my new favorite piece of art.

And eventually all that effort, all the energy expended, brings us tumbling down. By the time an
#autistic person is in their late 20s, early 30s, they may well have experienced 'burnout', where whatever circuits and batteries we were using to mask just wear out.Deze collectie tonen -
Remembering Father’s Day dedicating to all those who’ve lost their dads, & all those fathers who are still alive and keeping going. HUGEST shout out to my dad today, for being the best dad of an
#Autistic daughter (which is Me) and never giving up on me. I love you, daddy!!!

Sometimes I think I’m not
#autistic but then I realize I haven’t eaten in 8 hours because every decent food I can think of has Bad Texture or Too Much Texture or Not Enough Taste or Too Much Of That One Taste, and the only thing I can bring myself to eat is ice cream. https://twitter.com/autsciperson/status/1409002042417467392 … -
Had one of my proudest teacher's moments on Thursday, when my whole class got behind me to encourage the only
#autistic pupil in the class, to climb a climbing wall. X made it all the way to the top and pressed the buzzer. The whole class celebrated for that pupil's achievement. pic.twitter.com/vhBcKDXMtw

We have to do this, you understand. The alternative is a life of literally endless negativity from our friends, family, peers, colleagues, employers. Trouble is, typical
#autistic behaviours are seen (for no good reason, for the most part) to be socially unacceptable.Deze collectie tonen -
Me studying dead by daylight for months until I finally learn how to play a little bit better. I'm

Let’s reframe the term “picky eater”. We need to understand why a child might prefer the same crackers rather than another non-preferred food item, it offers safety and comfort, especially relevant for
#autistic children. It make sense! If we understand, then we can support.#ASDpic.twitter.com/kQeH66KxsU

One of my self care practices is growing tomatoes and peppers on my balcony. When I'm depressed the plants give me some happiness.

I was contacted this week by a newly diagnosed
#autistic adult thanking me for creating an environment where it's normal to talk about autism.
So, I will continue to speak openly, positively & truthfully about my experiences here & in schools.

I’m running into a bunch of young adult
#autistic advocate accounts… This makes my heart happy.

Shame has been somewhat of a constant companion since I was young. My feelings were always too big or too disproportionate. My questions were too much and too big. I was the insatiable asker of "why" instead of the polite, well mannered child. And I felt BAD about it.

I used to see crying as a weakness when I was young because I was always punished for it because I am
#autistic, but… Now crying is my strength.
So cry it out! Everyone needs a good cry!

Where we can, we gradually learn how to hide these behaviours, stuff them right down into our psyche, conceal them, suppress them. We 'mask'. We go around pretending to not be
#autistic. Some of us are very good at this.Deze collectie tonen
