The Queen’s Lyre c. 2,500 BCE. From the Royal Cemetery of Ur. Bull’s head covered in gold with lapis lazuli eyes, hair & beard. Found in the tomb of Queen Puabi during excavations in the 1920s.

The Standard of Ur, c.2,500 BCE. A remarkable & mysterious box decorated with mosaic scenes which give us a glimpse of life in ancient Mesopotamia about 4,500 years ago. Its purpose is unknown. Discovered in the 1920s during excavations at the Royal Cemetery of Ur.

The Bronze Age Sun Chariot found at Trundholm, Denmark in 1902. Cast bronze, c. 1400 BCE. One side of the sun disc is gilded. The sun is pulled by a horse on wheels symbolising its journey through the sky, a motif found on many Scandinavian Bronze Age objects.

Three beautiful and ancient Mycenaean ‘Palace Style’ amphorae, decorated about 3,500 years ago with palm-trees, aquatic birds and octopus. From the Mycenaean cemeteries at Argive Deiras and Prosymna. On display at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.

The Gokstad Viking Ship. An ocean-going vessel built from oak c.AD890, used in the burial of a wealthy chieftain c. AD900. Thirty-two shields were attached to each side of the boat. Amongst the grave goods were 2 peacocks, pointing to his international connections.

Anglo-Saxon grave goods discovered in a wealthy female burial during excavations at Butler’s Field, Lechlade in 1985. The richness and number of grave goods suggest she was of high status within her community. Dated 6th century AD. On display at the Corinium Museum.

Beautiful Bronze Age silver rhyton in the shape of a bovine head. Gold horns, muzzle & rosette. Discovered in a ‘Royal’ tomb at Grave Circle A, Mycenae. Likely used as a ritual vessel during the funeral ceremony about 3,500 years ago. Imported from Minoan Crete.

Constantinople Gate-Nicaea This Arcus Triumphalis was built in C1st AD. In C3rd under threat of the Goths, the city walls were merged, adding an additional gate. It connected Nicaea to major hubs on the main military route.
