Happy February! This month's calendar image is a male Pine Grosbeak puffed up beside a heart shaped leaf during an extreme cold spell. What an incredible moment!

Now that the crazy wind has died down, it seems the predators are out again, meaning I had great luck with

Started the week with snowy owls & ended it with this gorgeous
#greatgrayowl. I was really starting to believe the northern goshawk who has been frequenting our woods scared all of these guys away, it has been so long since seeing one!#albertabirds#owls#birdspic.twitter.com/ANiVCvMN4S

This tiny bird, the Calliope Hummingbird, only weighs as much as a pingpong ball and still manages to migrate about 8000 km each year!

Each year, Swainson's Hawks embark on one of the longest migrations of any North American raptor to their wintering grounds in Argentina.

Well I did another one! I'm really enjoying painting birds lately, and there's so many kinds here in Alberta, I could go for a long time yet! Here's my latest, Red Tailed Hawk, acrylic on masonite.

Closest I have ever gotten to a pileated woodpecker (male) but he just would not move clear of the grass for a decent whole body shot. He was funny to watch as he furiously threw bark from the tree over his head each time he lifted it.

Saturday July 20 is going to the birds! Join Terra Simieritsch for a mixed media painting class or make a nesting box(es) for your own backyard with our resident naturalist Jim Critchley (this one is family friendly!).

I believe first pic is a female ruffed grouse followed by what I think is a male, trying his best to impress her with his size. First time I have seen a grouse so puffed up (other than in winter).

I have spent a whole lot of time wandering our woods and have only been graced by the presence of a Barred Owl a handful of times. Yesterday was one of those times
