Dear job applicant, Please send us a cover letter that no one will read. Please also send a teaching philosophy that no one will read. These documents are required, although the final decision will be made on the basis of your publications.

Rejection is exceedingly common in academia. The acceptance rate for top journals is about 10%. Can you imagine a lawyer who loses 90% of his cases or a doctor who loses 90% of her patients?

Academia can drag you down because rejection is the norm, not the exception. You must celebrate every success, no matter how small. Set small goals and throw a mini-party for yourself when you meet them.

With all the negativity lately, I just want to say I enjoy my PhD. It can be hard and stressful, but I cherish the privilege of working as a scientist and meeting amazing collaborators.

A nice read about how not to lose your identity during graduate studies.

Some may say that I was having way too much fun coloring/editing my SEM images and they would be correct. But look how cool they look!! I am really so very proud of the results this experiment

One the hardest parts of academia (aside from funding rates) is the distance we live from family. Aging parents, small child and a minimum 4.5 trip home (flight + drive) really hits home

I will visit Edinburgh for the women's studies conference in early march, but this is my last time to apply for a UK visa. I am kind of boycotting as of now. I paid €117 for 6 month visa including lots of documents.

I just submitted my PhD!
I am full of feelings and gratitude which I’ll be able to better articulate after some sleep.
For now, here is a little photo series of my submission this morning.
What an incredible ride this has been!

Just had my first ever paper accepted for publication (with revisions)! How does everyone celebrate this kind of thing?

Anyone else ever wonder if academic conferences are actually a series of elaborate experiments to see what happens when you put large groups of introverts together and force them to make small talk?

Wisdom from one of my dear former students. To all my discouraged tweeps: hang in there.

Printed the thesis for soft binding today! Spotted some typos but took a deep breath and just accepted that I'll never find every single one
