Florence Small Gaynor, RN, BSN, MPH was the first black woman to head a major teaching hospital. She was a registered nurse and in 1971 was selected as the Executive Director for Sydenham Hospital out of 20 candidates - the rest of them men.

Estelle Massey Riddle Osborne, RN, MA was was born in 1901 in TX, and in 1931 became the first African American to earn a Master's in Nursing. She was the first black board member of ANA and worked to eliminate racial discrimination in nursing.
