This is a beautiful black bellied pangolin (Phataginus tetradactyla) I met a few months ago in West Africa. She was rescued from a market stall. Over 400,000 African pangolins are killed every year for their scales, which are used in ‘traditional’ Asian medicine

#WorldPangolinDay: Each day around 300 pangolins are poached for their scales & meat, making them the most illegal trafficked mammal in the world. With your help, we are working to stop the illegal trade in wildlife at a local level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqC3ieJJlFM … -

Pangolins are believed to be the world’s most trafficked animal. Thousands are poached every year for their scales for traditional Chinese medicine (there are no proven health benefits to consuming scales — they are made of keratin, just like fingernails!)

Hunters are no longer taking pangolins only opportunistically—they're actively hunting them https://on.natgeo.com/2SOBl59

#PangolinFunFact Day 3: Pangolins have poor vision, but an excellent sense of smell which they use to find insects. Most species are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and foraging at night. This contributes to the difficulty in studying this cryptic species.#WorldPangolinDay pic.twitter.com/OgOCtHkEAA

#PangolinFunFact Day 2:#Pangolin scales are mostly composed of keratin – the same material that makes up your hair and fingernails – with no scientifically proven medical qualities. In fact, many traditional herbs and drugs are cheaper and more effective.#WorldPangolinDay pic.twitter.com/YWvJWPWiyC
