  1. This. I’m a grown woman who is sick of men demanding that I smile, that I speak politely, that I sit quietly and take unwarranted criticism, that I silently take their disapproval of my life - all so they’re comfortable. Fuck that.

Can we talk a moment about why I say 'fuck'? It has to be a thread, because this is actually complex. And a wee bit personal. And important. At least to me.

I say fuck for emphasis. I say it when I’m fucking around or when I’m not fucking around. I say it when I bang my knee on my desk every fucking day. Mostly I say it because I can, and because being a lady is a tired oppressive trope that doesn’t mean a fucking thing.

I have a PhD in creative writing. I published a translation of English's first epic poem. When I choose my words, I choose them as an expert, and I fucking mean them.

  5. The less power a woman has, the less freedom she has to curse. The more a woman is caught in the intersections of oppressions, the more her language is policed. Who does civility serve?

Whenever I stand at a podium to give a lecture,I begin with my declaration of faith:“Fuck the patriarchy.”I could say “dismantle the patriarchy” but I don’t because I am a woman; a woman of color; a Muslim woman. And I am not supposed to say fuck.

I grew up in an authoritarian, fundamentalist environment. Swearing would get me slapped. Swearing as a girl, would get me shamed. Swearing now reminds me I’m free. ✌🏻

Society spends an inordinate amount of time policing what women are allowed to say, how they’re allowed to say it, and when & where they’re allowed to speak. And, honestly, I just don’t have fucking time for that!

I say “fuck” because I’m a fucking grown ass woman and I don’t have to answer to anyone as to the manner in which I speak.

"Patriarchy punishes women for profanity because it wants us to forever remain within the straitjacket of niceness and politeness, despite the violence it subjects us to." darn fuckin tootin

  13. We are not fighting on an equal battlefield. The shock and the offense profanity causes are necessary and important. Surely, misogyny and racism and so many other -isms and the violence they visit upon our bodies are more offensive than words?

  14. Once while standing in line at Denver airport security,a white man — another passenger waiting to go through —demanded I “prove” I was a U.S. citizen. “Fuck you!” was my immediate response.Another white man immediately and predictably chimed in: “Language! Language!”

I say fuck because it has a pleasing sound. I say fuck because sometimes it means a pleasing thing. I say fuck because sometimes there is no other word. I say fuck because only actions can be obscene. And if it offends you, I don't really give a fuck.

Because why use hundreds of words when “fuck” is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, and the best interjection.
