    Being able 2 read thousands of nuanced, sweet, fascinating, etc. stories about characters that I love in situations and worlds possible & not possible canonically. Not having 2 settle for just the mainstream versions & my own imagination.

    On days I'm struggling, and can take me back to a single moment when I felt happy. It's also therapeutic to write/create because you can explore difficult topics/feelings with people you "know" (but don't have to face in the morning.)

    It means community and self-expression. Enjoying shared interests and exploring fantastical worlds together. Building, not tearing each other down. It means never truly being alone. Happy International Fanworks Day 💜

    - I basically learned English reading fanfic in the 90s. I made friends for life over fic and fanart. Making fanart on the regular in my twenties gave me skills that led me to actual real jobs.

  14. It’s everything. It’s life I never knew existed but now I can’t live without. It’s a way to express my creativity and passion and it’s a hobby to entertain and enjoy.

    So. 1. When I was young fan, fanworks were my window to other world views, which I won't otherwise have been exposed to irl in a conservative Asian environment. I like to think that, if not for fanworks, I would be considerably more bigoted now.
