    Looking up through the ocean towards the base of the which is encrusted with crystals, deposited like sand grains, in a layer ~4 m thick. We have captured the silhouette of 'Walter' the Seal against the greens and blues of sunlight filtered through snow and algae

  6. Casey expeditioners were lucky enough to see this weekend. Station chef Jordan said, 'It was cold but the sun was out and the pups were either sleeping or playing up for the cameras. They're SO gorgeous!’ 📸 J. Smith

  7. What's fast but doesn't go anywhere? Fast ice! Fast ice is frozen sea water which sits ‘fast’ against the coast. breed on it, give birth on it. It also acts like a belt and regulates the flow of ice into the sea.

    The Weddell Sea is a big water mass in the Southern Ocean. Covering an area of roughly one million square miles, it’s nearly as big as Argentina! It's named after the British explorer James , who navigated a path through the icy, waters in 1823. 📷: Dominic Barrington

  10. No mammal lives in so far south as the fascinating seal. For 50 years, their populations around Davis station have been studied. That legacy is continued by winter expeditioners who venture out throughout the year to count seal numbers.

    Here’s the first from day 1 of our navigation training in . We break through the loose pack ice of the Sound to reach the Sea. Obvs this is speeded up though because we actually break the ice at about 4-6 Kts.
