This day in 1945, French/British Special Operations Executive agent Violette Szabo is executed at the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Szabo was captured during a mission behind enemy lines following D-Day, France. Szabo was the second woman to be awarded the George Cross.

This day in 1945, Belgium is officially liberated, the country was reported to be free of German troops. The liberation seemed at hand in September 1944, but this ended by the German Ardennes offensive in December.

This day in 1944, Field Marshal Manstein begins his relief attempt to break the Korsun–Cherkasy Pocket. Six German divisions were surrounded. Though many trapped men escaped, they had to leave nearly all of their equipment behind, with heavy losses.

This day in 1943, the battle of Stalingrad has ended. Over 90,000 Axis soldiers have been captured, only about 5,000 will survive imprisonment. Stalingrad remains the largest and bloodiest (1.8–2 million killed, wounded, captured) battle in the history of warfare.

Tuesday Tank: rolling the Kugelpanzer ('ball tank') into the German armour series. This one was captured by the Red Army in Japanese-occupied China in 1945 & is now at Patriot Park, Moscow. The single crewman sat on a motorbike-type seat.
