Check out what I've been up to for the first few months of my PhD!

#FishSesh How can we stop#bycatch? Measures reducing seabird bycatch in problematic fishing gears have been developed + tested outside of EU. In some cases they have shown to achieve significant reductions, over 90%. Factsheets: https://www.birdlife.org/bycatch#WSTC5#saveseabirdspic.twitter.com/9KCIl2QrsU

1/4 Shore breeding seabird sites are limited in populated areas by a lack of suitable, undisturbed nesting habitat. Wider management & habitat creation are needed but resource intensive. Simple artificial structures can provide some temporary, small scale help.

4/4 Older origins for the word “Petrel” are as an onomatopoeic reference to their behaviour of "pitter-pattering" with their feet as they forage. Or, it may originate from an old English word “pet”, meaning “fart”; referring to their smell or bubbling calls.

3/4 The origin of the name "Petrel" is controversial; often claimed to refer to Simon Peter, who walked towards Jesus on the Sea of Galilee, just as Storm Petrels “walk” on the sea surface. The first reference to this origin was by William Dampier in 1703.

#WSTC5#ContSesh1 | There’s still so much we don’t know about the interactions between#seabirds and#plasticpollution. Results suggest targeted#beachclean could help to minimise the quantity of plastic available to herring gulls, reducing a potential environmental stressor.pic.twitter.com/wLUSSKaoN7

#WSTC5 3 So far we have collated data from a range of#seabird species, largely from UK colonies, with Gannets & Shags frequently incorporating#marinedebris into their nests#ornithology#ContSesh1#ERIresearchpic.twitter.com/gG5aaPtTd8

#ContSesh1 My first#WSTC5 My undergrad dissertation@ReadingBioSci I collected great skua pellets from Fair Isle@FI_Obs and analysed their prey and plastic content, as an indicator of the#MarinePlastic ingestion by the species and their prey. 3% of pellets contained plastic.pic.twitter.com/Qo2PkY8fqS

#WSTC5@sjurdur raised a topic in#MovementEcology that I am particularly interested in: how can tracking studies be used to develop and prioritise#conservation strategies. I have a review if this topic for those interested https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fevo.2015.00155/full ….@Seabirders@TheSeabirdGrouphttps://twitter.com/sjurdur/status/1116026366238121986 … -
#WSTC5 twitter conferences are great! I’m on a remote island, have just spent the night retrieving GPS units from Buller’s shearwaters, and I can present my masters research and see what neat work people are doing all over the world on my phone!#thefuturueisnow -

#WSTC5#ConsSesh2 Birds aren't the only characters in your stories: include yourself and colleagues, too. Take readers on your adventures. They'll be struck by the lengths you go to study and protect seabirds, and realize that this work is important. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2018/07/seabirds-art-news-new-zealand-conservation …pic.twitter.com/qFFmA73fLS

4/4 We found that survivors of cohorts experiencing poor early life show higher survival in adulthood. Early development, first winter & reproduction are potential factors generating between cohort survival heterogeneity.
