A message to my students about mental health

    Dear students
Although I’m a couple of weeks late for University Mental Health Day, I wanted to share something with you today.

I started taking anti-depressants in Sept 2018 as I’d got depressed due to a few difficult, though not dramatic or tragic, things in my personal life. The anti-depressants really helped me and so did the support of my friends, colleagues and loved ones.

I hope that you didn’t notice anything different about me. Not because I feel any shame about mental illness, but because I didn’t want you to worry. As staff, it’s appropriate for us to worry about you from time to time. But it’s not right for you to worry about us!

Anyway, today marks the first day since September 2018 that I’m no longer taking anti-depressants.

I share this because it’s some good news personally but also because I know that there is still at stigma related to mental health and the most effective way to break that damaging stigma is to talk honestly about our own experiences.

The irony of is that I'm now into my 13th working hour of the day (with a few more to go) before I've had time to acknowledge it. The system is taking advantage of us caring about our students & research. It's breaking us.

But we're concerned by some of the comments we've seen on our social media posts. Last week was . There are people in our community who have been affected by the issues raised in the Sussexes' interview. They may read those comments. Please, be kind.

isn't just about stopping people ending their lives. It's enabling people to share emotional pain. Compassion, listening, validating distress to earn the right to share hope and find ways to help them stay safer to build lives worth living

To all you students out there struggling I hope you’re okay. It can be so lonely. I have been on my masters since September and haven’t made one friend on my course because we haven’t had the opportunity. It’s difficult I know but we’re nearly at the end

And if you are a lecturer, supervisor, head of department etc - be kind to those struggling. Be a person, be empathetic and point out practical things that can help. Move deadlines, delegate if needed, help with mitcircs applications, encourage self care
