After delivering A-bomb parts to the Pacific island of Tinian, the #USSIndianapolis sank OTD in 1945 after being torpedoed by a Japanese sub. Only 317 of 1196 sailors survived, with many dying from injury, exposure & shark attacks after drifting in the ocean for almost four days.

On this date in 1945, Japanese submarine I-58 sank the USS Indianapolis, killing 883 seamen. Most would die during the following four days, until an aircraft noticed the survivors. #USSIndianapolis

If you have not familiarized Yourself with the #USSIndianapolis there is a an incredible Docu available on Amazon Filled with interviews from Survivors, & a final scathing US Navy report of how it couldve been prevented. Its an incredibly compelling heartbreaking story. #WW2
