  1. Today's is an easy pick for me since my thesis is all about . Zoisites can be pretty especially tanzanite. But what takes the cake for me is that zircons from the Jack Hills of Australia have been dated all the way back to the Hadean!

  2. is talking about how Zircon is Forever (ignoring radiation damage, cough cough), so let me show you something cool

Zircon microstructures can record rapid decompression during explosive volcanic eruptions through residual strains, providing a means for distinguishing explosive eruption deposits. This grain from a volcanic Tuff developed near planar microstructure features.

A figure with three sub-figures containing maps of the grain orientation, dislocation density, and most tensile principal stress in a grain of zircon proposed to be a result of rapid decompression.

Come on ! No other mineral tells us more about crustal evolution, particularly in the early Earth. It's the ultimate time capsule for U-Pb, Hf and O isotopes, and REEs. This beauty is one of mine from Jack Hills, it's as old as the oldest rocks on Earth!

Zircon looks awesome in thin section and cathodoluminescence, but these ones are small enough (~50µm) to show birefringence colours through the whole crystal when viewed between crossed polars. Just another way to enjoy this mineral's beauty.
