Today's
@MineralCup is an easy pick for me since my thesis is all about#TeamZircon. Zoisites can be pretty especially tanzanite. But what takes the cake for me is that zircons from the Jack Hills of Australia have been dated all the way back to the Hadean! pic.twitter.com/q7EstpnNvP

#TeamZircon is talking about how Zircon is Forever (ignoring radiation damage, cough cough), so let me show you something cool#MinCuppic.twitter.com/HSS3xgonVg

Zircon microstructures can record rapid decompression during explosive volcanic eruptions through residual strains, providing a means for distinguishing explosive eruption deposits. This

Come on
#TeamZircon! No other mineral tells us more about crustal evolution, particularly in the early Earth. It's the ultimate time capsule for U-Pb, Hf and O isotopes, and REEs. This beauty is one of mine from Jack Hills, it's as old as the oldest rocks on Earth!#MinCup2018pic.twitter.com/CkYVQwqLK1

#TeamZircon today, mainly for its uses in dating. Though I have just found out from a bit of background reading that it can be found in sandstone and conglomerate as well as the typical igneous rocks -

The final! The mineral that records >4 billion years of crustal history versus a major mantle mineral. Let's go

Zircon looks awesome in thin section and cathodoluminescence, but these ones are small enough (~50µm) to show birefringence colours through the whole crystal when viewed between crossed polars. Just another way to enjoy this mineral's beauty.
