    October 3rd is a day of double importance to me. Firstly, as a British Germanist it is the day of German unity, celebrating when East and West Germany were reunited in 1990 almost a year after the fall of the wall

    And last year marked the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. Democracy and market economies rule across Europe, but politically the former blocs are drifting apart again

    I arrived in Germany four years ago, you can still see the difference between the east and west but the multiculturalism and freedom of Berlin is a large part of why I fell in love with the city
