    (1/3) The Service has scheduled the executions of Roslan bin Bakar and Pausi bin Jefridin for Wednesday. We call on the people of Singapore to stand with these families and reject state-sanctioned murder. Halt these executions and abolish the death penalty.

    Roslan bin Bakar and Pausi bin Jefridin are scheduled to be hanged on Wednesday, 16 Feb 2022. Both were arrested in 2008 in connection to the same drug transaction. Four people at the transaction, including Pausi, identified Roslan as the mastermind. Pausi and Roslan's convictions were largely based on the testimonies of others, and both were sentenced to death in 2010 after being found guilty by the court of trafficking 96.07 grams of diamorphine and 76.37 grams of methamphetamine. But later on, Pausi admitted that he and the others had agreed in the lock-up after the arrest to push the blame to Roslan.
    In 2015, Roslan's lawyers filed a criminal motion for retrial based on new factual evidence - a handwritten note by Pausi admitting that he and the others conspired to frame Roslan as the mastermind, in order to receive reduced charges. However, the Court’s view was that the recantation of evidence is "inherently suspect" and that the court must "dismiss bare applications which are based on the unreliable testimony of witnesses who seek to retract their earlier testimony”, which constitute “opportunistic attempts to reverse convictions” and therefore “would usually demonstrate the precise opposite” of a miscarriage of justice.
    The court's view was that recantation evidence of one witness is usually insufficient to change the outcome if the case is built on multiple threads of evidence. It rejected the admission of Pausi's note on the grounds that Pausi had not provided a good enough reason as to why he had lied at first instance, why Pausi chose to wait two years to recant, and that the evidence given at trial was consistent. The court chose to believe the investigating officers’ evidence denying Pausi’s claim that he told CNB of the conspiracy to frame Roslan in 2013.
    Pausi submited in his affidavit that while he was on trial, he agreed with the others to push blame to Roslan to save himself, but that having been sentenced to death, he was no longer afraid of the consequences of telling the truth, and that his only motive was to clear his conscience as he was unable to live with the guilt of having falsely implicated Roslan. The position the court took in response to this - that the withdrawal of a testimony against someone makes them more suspicious - is perplexing and deeply concerning. More broadly, the pattern in Roslan's case were that arguments to exculpate him were seen by the court to confirm his guilt instead.
