    The area on Feb 3rd 2020 was 14.35 million sq km. This is 0.71 million sq km below the 1981-2010 average and the 14th lowest extent ever recorded on this day of the year. This is 4.4% above the record low set in 2018 (13.743 million sq km)

  8. Some years, like this one, an "ice bridge" forms in Nares Strait in the Canadian Arctic. This stops old ice flowing into Baffin Bay until it fractures in the spring. We use SAR and Infrared imagery to help find features like this.

    The area from the ice chart for 27th Jan 2020 is 420,851 sq km. This is 22,591 sq km above the 1981-2010 average.

    Bering Sea extent from is slowly increasing, but remains below the long term average & last year. But extent isn't everything. Sustained cold weather near the Alaska coast since mid-Dec helping to thicken and stabilize nearshore ice.

    Bering Sea extent fell by more than 20% in the past week and as of January 18th was at 67% of the 1981-2010 average. Lack of ice is especially notable off the Chukotka coast. Quite likely to see expansion of the extent upcoming week.
