    The closest language in Germany (or orig. from Germany inc. Yiddish) to compare to would be Plattdeutsch, as we know it has even had a direct influence on Scots particularly on the East Coast

    I feel like the dialects best for comparison with something like Yiddish & other West Germanic languages would be something from Eastern Angus including Dundee. Perhaps around Arbroath & Monifieth etc

    A useful expression - Fair faw ye (or fair faa ye) Lit. "fair fall you" - may good fortune befall you. A traditional Scots blessing of good fortune. When Burns addressed the haggis he said "Fair faw yer honest sonsie face, grand chieftain o the puddin race"P

    Currently translating a article into English (to be published dual-language) and having to look up words in the dictionary! I've said it before, but never am I more aware that Scots is a distinct language to English than when I'm directly translating between the two.
