Lyra (age 6) sent me this message this morning. It’s a big
thank you
to everyone who helped make a law in Scotland that stops grown ups from hitting children.

Today is the day! This afternoon it’s the stage 1 debate for
@JohnFinnieHI ‘s Bill to give Children Equal Protection! MSPs will be voting on the general principles of the Bill. It’s not to late to ask your MSPs to support the Bill!#SPEqualProtection -
A quiet (ish

) moment of reflection on the morning of this momentous vote for #SPEqualProtection thinking of those brilliant activists that I have the pleasure of working alongside right now & also those that went well before us. The letters, postcards, calls, meetings. (1/3)Prikaži ovu nit -
Dear Parliament, you've always said you want Scotland to be the best place to grow up in the world. I agree. Please vote to BAN HITTING KIDS today. Its simple. And in years to come history will be kind to you. Love you, John x

#SPEqualProtection It’s important we celebrate this progress, but we need to keep moving forward. Protecting children from violence is a start - but we need to protect all their rights through full and direct incorporation of UNCRC. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/oct/03/scotland-becomes-first-country-in-uk-to-ban-smacking-of-children … -
Right wing commentary on
#SPEqualProtection is fascinating - more virtue signalling, nanny state etc from the SNP. Fact is most European countries prohibit hitting children, some have done so for decades. Scotland will not become an outlier intruding this, we will stop being one. -
We did it - the
#SPEqualProtection bill passed today!!
It was a pleasure to have spoken at the after-party on the role @OfficialSYP played in this groundbreaking campaign. A massive thank you to@JohnFinnieHI,@agcolehamilton,@GailRossSNP and many more who made it happen.pic.twitter.com/zuRlWnefdj

I really disagree with the premise that the
#SPEqualProtection will criminalise parents. I don't understand why that is the angle being prioritised over protecting children's rights. Would we argue that adults skelping another adult shouldn't be criminalised? Of course not! -
“You just don’t hit children. It’s that simple,” says
@Ross_Greer highlighting the importance of this legislation to progress children’s rights & meet international standards in Scotland#spequalprotection -
On our way to Cardiff for my first British-Irish Council meeting - top day for it!

I am so excited that today is the day that hitting children (let's not call it smacking, makes it sound benign) may be banned in Scotland
@ScotParl#SPEqualProtection -
Delighted to have just voted for the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill and it has passed overwhelmingly. Another landmark day for our parliament. Well done
@JohnFinnieHI#SPEqualProtection -
And it passed! The Equal Protection Against Assault bill will become law. Truly historic day that I am very proud to be part of. This is why I do this job.
#SPEqualProtection@JohnFinnieHI -
I congratulate the Scottish Parliament for adopting the law to give children equal protection from assault. There is no place for violence in a child's life. This law is a good step towards the full realisation of children’s rights in the country.

I'm calling on MSPs to pass the
#SPEqualProtection bill to#StopKidsBeingHit, in line with young people's views. Children's rights are human rights, and our legal systems must reflect this
