    Walked with the going fella down Iris Drive on Tuesday for the first time in years and said - 'you never see Paddy nowadays'. Just found out he's died. Always had time for everyone. Passed him every morning bringing the boys to school. He never missed saying hello.

    Very sad news. The mighty Paddy Roycroft, Guardian switchboard legend, has died. Paddy was a wonderful man – funny, warm, kind, wise, unforgettable. And he made a wonderful Irish coffee. Love you Padd.

    Look at my phone during a night out and see that has died. He had which is what I had. Such an under-researched, under-funded cancer which gets little press despite being the 5th biggest killer. Symptoms (blood in pee) are often dismissed.

    Very poignant after today’s bad news!!

    I’m worried for those with mental health issues, far more than those testing positive for Covid right now. Be there for your friends and family, many will need it. I have a few friends struggling with it all.

    So sad to hear today that Lord Ashdown has died aged 77. Paddy was a great man who, despite having a CV as long as your arm, never lost the common touch.

    Paddy Ashdown was a politician who combined being a character the public liked with strong principle and thoughtful action. That is a very rare thing to achieve in politics. I campaigned with him against Brexit and couldn’t match his energy even at 75!
