    Why do people think that, to be 'genuine' a refugee must be poverty stricken? War, tyranny, and persecution can affect people from all backgrounds. Often those with money have the best chance of escape - it doesn't mean they were safe in their own country.

  5. What a story. In Syria, he was a human rights activist & English teacher. The Assad regime arrested & tortured him for protesting the government. Now in Canada since 2015, he has helped more than 3,000 newcomers settle & build their lives in Ottawa. 🇨🇦

    What I'm getting from Twitter today is that nobody can come to this country as a refugee unless they've sailed the seven seas in a washing up bowl. If you've arrived from mainland Europe, you should've claimed asylum there instead. What happened to humanity??
