When I started working the minimum wage was $3.25 the current federal wage is $7.25. A living wage should be $22.50 to $26 an hour. Inflation is risen exponentially while wages remain stagnant. The cost of living far has surpassed the minimum wage.

If we hadn’t raised the minimum wage in hard times, we wouldn’t have a federal minimum wage to begin with. It was enacted during the Great Depression to put a floor under wages and boost consumer buying power. FDR called it “an essential part of economic recovery.”

Statement from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle on national day of action for Raise the Minimum Wage Act:

I urge Congress to pass the Raise the Wage Act and give 32 million Americans the chance to earn a living wage. I was proud to sign Cook County’s ordinance to raise the wage to $15 per hour in 2017. In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, no one should live in poverty working a full-time job. No one. Essential workers have risked their lives in this pandemic for us to eat, purchase household goods, and survive. Let’s thank them with a living wage.
