    Watching all of this unfold in is sad & exhausting. I won't bother to read the PAN forums because if it's anything like it was during , then it's full of NWLs who don't think they are part of the problem. Search your feelings, you know this to be true.

    One thing to think about when discussing Black characters: check your use of language like “thugs, ghetto” etc. Black culture is varied and rich and you are using racist dog whistle words to describe characters from certain backgrounds.

    And finally, a call to action. It doesn't have to be this way. But change will not be easy, nor will it come without growing pains. Those are not excuses not to try.

    RWA can do better than 4% representation. If the will is there to fix it.
    Read the full report. Join the conversation. #RITAdata Take action.
    Make 2020 the year of change! And if that means the award goes on hiatus to fix this, so be it.

  16. Finally wrote a blog post. Time for my feelings on the annual controversy, especially after a whole year of the romance author-readership promising to do better.

  17. About the whole I just wanna say this: when authors of color speak up about systematic racism and discrimination, our "job" as a white authors is not to argue with them, require them to defend themselves, or ask them to take OUR hurt feelings into account. 1/2

    The more I think about it, the more I'm for an idea like affirmative action to break the systematic oppression within Romancelandia's RITAs. Something has got to give. Both the judges and entries must be equally filled to the brim non-white, cis and het folks.
