Ask your supervisor if it's OK to record parts of your meeting. This allows you to concentrate on what is being said. And to check out any confusing bits later. This can be especially useful if English isn't your first language.

#7PhDSecrets Secret 6: Get help. It's OK to ask for help. In fact, the smart thing to do is to get help. Ask your supervisor. Ask in your department. Ask other students. Use the Library and Support services. Attend workshops (especially ThinkWell ones!)#PhDchat#PhDforum pic.twitter.com/UD3uFed4kb

This morning I planned to sit down and getting some writing done, but mentally I felt exhausted. It’s so easy to get caught up over the pressure of writing guilt and not listen to what our bodies need.

One reason people feel
#guilty is due to fantasy hours. You tell yourself you're working but really not doing much. Real hours are a way to reduce guilt. Real = no distractions, just doing the job. 2 Real hours = 10 Fantasy hours. And less guilt.#PhDForum#ECRchat#postdocpic.twitter.com/LXHL1Z4lEM

Selecting a research supervisor. It's easy to be starstruck by the big name or the prestigious lab or institution. But just because someone is good at research does not automatically make that person a good supervisor for you. Do some research

When you start a
#PhD you are learning how to do research. You don't know how to do it so ask questions. Lots of questions. If you already knew how to do a PhD there wouldn't be any point in doing it. You are doing it to learn.#PhDchat#PhDforum#academicchatterpic.twitter.com/DkTCu475qZ

I can usually spot a
#PhD student about 20 meters away. How? They always carry a big cloud of guilt with them. They always feel guilty. Have I done enough? Am I doing the right thing? I should be doing something else.#PhDForum#PhDchat#acwripic.twitter.com/5O6ijLRrnv

#MentalHealth tip: There's a lot of talk about how hard a#PhD is, how you have to struggle and suffer. You can feel guilty for not suffering enough. It's important to remember that you can be happy during your PhD. It's OK to be happy.#PhDchat#ECRchat#PhDforum#postdocpic.twitter.com/Be7cFWFbEX

#7PhDSecrets Secret 4: Say NO to distractions. For 1 or 2 hours close the door, turn off the phone/email alerts and focus. You can get a lot done in small amounts of focused time.#phdforum#PhDchat@qubgradschoolpic.twitter.com/vHmvKSuXoU

When you're doing a
#PhD you are learning how to do research. Which means it's OK not to know stuff and it's OK to ask lots of questions. Put up your L sign and start learning.#PhDchat#PhDForum pic.twitter.com/NSi6dpB83u
