Alarmones ppGpp & pppGpp reshape the bacterial proteome by acting on DNA/RNA/protein synthesis. Study shows that ppGpp-bound IF2 prevents formation of 30S translation initiation complex; extent of ppGpp tolerance depends on the specific mRNA

  16. Oh, my. This is quite cool. I didn't realize they were doing this on LIVE flies until I started reading the paper (ok, it does say it 👇). Individual cells can be observed. Oh, my. There are clever people out there.

Resistance to one class often confers vulnerability to others; study of nitrofurantoin shows that this "collateral sensitivity" arises via a combo of mechanisms that can be exploited to combat

Groundbreaking and revealed an Achilles heel of : collateral super-sensitivity to other ABx! But how does the super-sensitivity work? Strong effects arise from parallel mechanisms!

An adult 's abdomen is opaque, but "Bellymount" overcomes this problem, enabling imaging of live, intact flies at whole-organ & subcellular scales over multiple days (e.g. tracking of stem cell lineages & gut microbial colonization)
