I welcome ⁦⁦ ⁩’s declaration of the current novel outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. It is important to be clear about why a has been declared and what it means for countries in our Region.

. says "public health emergency of international concern" not PANIC. Globally we must "provide support to low- and middle-income countries to enable their response to this event, as well as to facilitate access to diagnostics, potential vaccines & therapeutics."

  15. To reiterate: this does not mean that has been declared a pandemic. Pandemic is specific to sustained human-to-human transmission in multiple regions of the globe. We have 2 other PHEICs in effect right now, for Ebola in DRC and for polio. Neither are pandemics.
