Another blow to Britain’s credibility on international law - criticism by UNSRs.
#OverseasOperationsBill “The universal prohibition against torture is absolute & non-derogable... Govts cannot lawfully grant impunity or otherwise decline to investigate & prosecute such crimes”. https://twitter.com/UN_SPExperts/status/1313027583894786048 …

The
#OverseasOperationsBill is rotten to its core. The government has ignored grave concerns from legal, defence and human rights experts. I am proud to vote against this anti-veteran and anti-human rights piece of legislation, for the second time. pic.twitter.com/759dW2nEOE -
Thanks to the 18 Labour MPs who voted against the
#OverseasOperationsBill which protects people who commit torture & other human rights abuses. Three of those brave MPs were junior ministers who have had to resign from their roles. Imagine losing your job for opposing torture. -
Our country has engaged in wars which in the view of many, saw untold brutality, detention & torture. We need to reckon with that by upholding the highest of standards - not artificially limit rules to evade responsibility. I voted against the
#OverseasOperationsBill tonight. -
A must read article by
@shamichakrabar1 about the government’s proposal to make it harder to prosecute soldiers for torture#OverseasOperationsBill https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/sep/22/government-break-law-torture-bill-military-personnel-civilians-overseas-operations … -
Keir Starmer whipping Labour MPs to abstain on the
#OverseasOperationsBill represents everything wrong with "centrism". You can't triangulate on torture. You either condemn it or you condone it. Aside from the moral implications of abstaining, it's politically nonsensical. -
The
@UKHouseofLords has just passed an amendment to the#OverseasOperationsBill that excludes torture and other serious crimes from its scope. There are still issues with the Bill - but this is HUGE! We hope the House of Commons backs this - the military is not above the law. pic.twitter.com/ol8YR0y8fn

The
#OverseasOperationsBill violates essential rule of law principles, including with regards to the absolute prohibition of torture. It also fails to protect the safety, well-being and rights of our military personnel. For these reasons, I have voted against it. -
Keir Starmer's Labour Party are now officially anti-veteran and pro- torture.
#OverseasOperationsBill -
This is HUGE! The UK govt's announced that
#WarCrimes will be removed from the scope of the#OverseasOperationsBill. While we wanted this Bill to be dropped, this is v welcome. People power works! To everyone who took action - thank you for standing up for human rights.

"Quakers will continue to work for a peaceful world in which war and the crimes associated with it are abolished." Keeping the bigger picture in mind as we celebrate our success in changing the

Today I voted against the
#OverseasOperationsBill as it: >is predicated on breaking international law >violates rule of law principles >endangers both our armed forces and civilians around the globe >prohibits prosecuting torture >creates impunity for serious offences >is unjust -
For more, read this by
@conorgearty on the licence to atrocity of the#OverseasOperationsBill. The challenges posed by this govt to the rule of law, human rights & international law keep growing. In Conor’s words - “part retaliation, part provocation.” https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/overseas-operations-bill-armed-forces-military-human-rights-law-labour-party …Show this thread -
Human rights don’t change depending on miles travelled or borders crossed. They are universal & non-negotiable. From Hallam to Herat, we all have the right to live free from torture. Obviously my Conservative colleagues disagree

They imprison
#Assange for documenting and exposing the war crimes of foreign states and now they want to grant impunity to those who commit torture and war crimes abroad. Impunity begets impunity. The
#OverseasOperationsBill Honour Roll 18 Labour MPs voted against: Abbott, Begum, Blake, Burgon, Byrne, Corbyn, Lavery, Long-Bailey, McDonnell, Osamor, Osborne, Ribeiro-Addy, Russell-Moyle, Sultana, Trickett, Webbe, Whittome, Winter. The rest? Cowards. -
These killings took place over five years ago. If these were UK troops and the proposed
#OverseasOperationsBill had been in force there would be an automatic presumption against guilt, making justice much less likely. Think about that. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/nov/19/australian-special-forces-involved-in-of-39-afghan-civilians-war-crimes-report-alleges …
