I would love for to do a candid interview with an OCD advocate. She curates such an empathetic, curious show and I can only imagine what she would do with mental health awareness

Fuck the hashtag. My life - my complicated, distressing, endlessly exhausting, uphill journey of a life, courtesy of a disorder it’s taken me twenty years of suffering to even begin to understand - is not a punchline to your jokes

  6. Liking to match my bookmark to my book = a cute quirk Not having kissed anyone for over 3 years due to contamination OCD and not being sure if I’ll ever be able to have relationships again = a debilitating mental illness is not cute or fun

See hashtag trending. Clicks to see tons of OCD advocates have hijacked it for awareness. Smiles! Bravo ➡️

I have OCD. It used to consume 99% of my thoughts. My hands bled nonstop from washing them. I couldn’t go to bed unless i did all my rituals. I thought my family would die if I didn’t do certain things. OCD isn’t a personality trait. It’s a serious illness.

  9. Good that if you click there are more people sharing their experiences and stating why the tag is damaging than there are actual jokes.

The good thing about the hashtag continuing to trend is that it's now doing so because so many people with OCD & others with plain human decency are tweeting that our suffering is not someone else's punchline. Remember too that you can report individual tweets.

Hashtags like this mean that OCD sufferers have to face two daily battles - one is with the extremely debilitating illness that can ruin lives, and the other is to get people to take it seriously.

We sure have a long way to go in terms of reducing the stigma associated with mental illness. As if living with one isn't hard enough you also have to face up to the stereotypes and misconceptions!

Upsetting to see this hashtag trending this morning. A year ago I almost died due to OCD. I’m thankfully still alive but have lost my career instead. OCD is a debilitating, life altering illness not a punchline

  14. OCD nearly killed me twice. Pre-diagnosis it stopped me travelling & doing things most people do. It wrecked relationships, caused distress to those around me & wreaked havoc. It put me in a psych ward. Anyone tweeting about after reading this - you are trash

  15. 26. sij

This is fucking disgusting. My OCD nearly killed me and people are making a joke of it ?! How is twitter allowing this ‘

The trending is incredibly offensive to all those who suffer from this debilitating disorder, myself included. Clearly more needs to be done to educate those who find this hilarious. Why don’t you start with this:

Genuinely upset by this trending hashtag . Nobody would dream of starting a hashtag to ridicule any other illness, but us sufferers always bear the brunt of it, and if we speak out we get called snowflakes. Try living with 😭💔

  18. I wonder how many people tweeting on the hashtag also retweet the Samaritans number every Time To Talk day.

  19. Honestly OCD nearly ended my life last year. It took over 90% of my day and night and made life unbearable. I’m now working through therapy to get a hold of it. By all means keep making it a punchline or quirk though

oh & just a heads up, OCD is NOT just about being tidy. maybe learn about it before you joke about it
