    Presently, five states – including three this year (Colorado, Nevada, Washington) – have enacted legislative bans and more are considering efforts, legislative or otherwise, to end the use of Native “themed” mascots.

    This is huge. A win! The people have spoken.

    Cleveland's MLB team, known as the Indians since 1915, will now be called the Guardians, the team announced today. The name change follows months of internal discussions amid a widespread push for institutions and teams to drop logos and names considered racist.

    Happy that Native youth in Cleveland won’t have to deal with “Cleveland Indians spirit day” at school and be surrounded by racist imagery like I did growing up. I’m so grateful for the decades of activism led by the Native community in CLE for this change!

    Whilst the silence from has been clear over the last year. The growing sound of change from all of those wanting change for the club to build itself a better identity has been clear and it will only grow stronger.

    It's been 1 year today since board undertook a review in to its branding as a result of our campaign. Since then the club has made no further comment & and have remained silent on the issue

    Original intent does not matter when it comes to Native American themed mascots. Racist caricatures, mocking gestures, cultural misappropriation, and the like have no honorable intent. Good for Cleveland.

    The "Cleveland Indians" was originally intended to honor Louis Sockalexis, a Native American baseball player who played for the Cleveland Spiders in the late 1800s, and who is often credited as the first Native American to play professional baseball.

    ‼️ This is a movement happening all over the country, now is the time to stand with us. We are not mascots. If you haven’t signed the petition to change the Elko “Indian” mascot here is the link ‼️‼️

    NCAI has been leading ’s movement to eradicate offensive Native “themed” mascots from sports and popular culture for more than 50 years. Last week, two more schools voted to drop their Native “themed” mascots, logos, and/or team names.
