Yesterday’s ice breaking got us to the Edwards Islands, in the Amundsen Embayment. The winds we hoped for to disperse the ice have arrived just a little late, 70 kn gusts have made the seas too rough to work today.

View from the bridge of the Nathaniel B Palmer yesterday as we broke through the sea ice barring our way to open water on the Amundsen Sea shelf. Fog meant the choice of route depended a lot on satellite images and radar.

Colleagues are still working on dating how fast the glacier retreated over this area and some of the work conducted this year on
#NBP2002 will help to quantify this, so watch this space! 3/3 -
First results from last year's
@ThwaitesGlacier cruise are up for discussion!#NBP2002 Check out the former bed of Thwaites here: https://www.the-cryosphere-discuss.net/tc-2020-25/@GlacierOffshore@EGU_TC https://twitter.com/EGU_TC/status/1224331526827057153 …pic.twitter.com/J1tCjIPE2U

Good luck to all my THOR

Not the first
#iceberg we've seen on@GlacierThwaites RV Nathaniel B Palmer cruise#NBP2002, but it's my first iceberg photo this trip. Not a bad start eh? pic.twitter.com/PxMHlTFFxT

We heard that the first iceberg was sighted on
#NBP2002's way to@ThwaitesGlacier! Does this mean it's time for@alielepp and@SantiKlaus to break out the cold gear?@uvaevsc@GlacierThwaitespic.twitter.com/5VLGL7lGPC

Sorry for
#NBP2002. At least your PIGlets made me giggle. I need all the giggles I can get today! -
Oh great (not). Just what we need on
#NBP2002 - a cluster of giant PIGlets trying to escape from Pine Island Bay just as RV Nathaniel Palmer is trying to get in there. https://twitter.com/kryosat/status/1223236689084153857 …

We received a really clear Sentinel-1 SAR image of our intended

The Drake Passage has been a little rough, as it often is, but we are getting there. Contest now for spotting the first iceberg.

You guys have to follow my PhD student
@AsmaraLehrmann during her first journey to Antarctica and@GlacierThwaites on#NBP2002. She’s not only an avid core reader and microfossil nerd (like me), but she’s also an accomplished photographer! https://twitter.com/AsmaraLehrmann/status/1222305169616113664 …
