  1. Yesterday while on the Thames Foreshore I found this tiny yellow glass bead with a sad & dark history. This is a ‘striped melon’, so called because of the colour & red/green stripes. Made in 18th C Venice or Bohemia & known as a slave trade bead.

  4. That magic moment you pick it up and for a moment time stands perfectly still. Found today, a beautifully carved bone (knife?). Possibly medieval. I’m a very happy mudlark tonight 😊

  5. I've arrived home after a few weeks away and have been tipping the dried mud out of some clay pipe bowls found in the Thames mud last month (think cone shaped sand castles but mud!), Only to find ....

  10. A beautifully decorated 16th/17th copper alloy century book clasop, found last week by fellow mudlark Clay. This would have kept the thick leather covers of hand bound book tightly closed around the thick velum or parchment pages that were prone to crinkle and warp.

  11. A short film about from the BBC with filmed out . We've been recording the ships timbers here since 2010, the remains of London's ship breaking industry.

A handful of treasures found not in the River Thames but in the mud not far from San Francisco. There is even a clay pipe stem, made by McDougall of Glasgow & exported to the USA mid 19th C. And a late 18th C Chinese domino.

  14. Retired Mudlark Graham DuHeaume collected knives during his time as a mudlark in the 70s and 80s. They date from the late 14th to 17th c and now he’s donated all 860 to the Worshipful Company of Cutlers. What finer home for such an amazing collection!
