  5. phosphate in your toothpaste may be from a BLM-ES lease? It's in cleansers and fertilizer too. Mined in Florida since late 1800s, BLM-ES manages leases totaling 900+ acres for sustained yield. 80% of the phosphate used in the U.S. is from Florida!

    Opal, the national gemstone of Australia, isn't technically a because it lacks the correct crystalline structure. Instead, this mineraloid has a lattice of silica spheres which gives it a wonderful irridescence!

    Happy ! If you've ever used drywall, plaster, or fertilizer, you can thank the mineral gypsum. Fed by a mineral-rich solution, this specimen grew from the wall of a cave in Chihuahua, 🇲🇽. The “ramshorns” occurred as some crystal strands grew faster than others.

    My students learned about minerals last week, so they know that my favorite is rosy red rhodochrosite. They can tell you that it's a carbonate, so it should react to HCl, and that these have rhombohedral crystal habit, among other things.

    Not your usual Sweet Home Mine rhodochrosite but look at how deep and vibrant the reddish-pink is. It’s very fun to come across these awesome specimens when you are working in the collections.
