  9. ! is now as close to Mercury as it will get in this first of six (s). Travelling at a maximum velocity of 7.8 km/s with respect to the innermost planet, its passing just 200 km above Mercury's surface. Pictures to follow in a few hours!

  10. Tonight, will perform the first of six (s), each honing the spacecraft's trajectory with the goal of shedding enough energy – after its two years ‘falling’ towards the Sun – to be caught by the innermost planet’s gravity 👉

  14. Shout out to ESA’s network and our three deep space dishes in New Norcia, Cebreros and Malargue who have provided remarkable measurements allowing us to track ’s trajectory, 110 million kilometres away, to the nearest 500 m 📡👀📏🛰️

    It really doesn’t get more bizarrely glamorous than this – sitting in my garden shed as it pours with rain outside & leaks inside, listening to Vaughn Williams, & processing fresh images of a 450°C planet one hundred million kilometres from Earth 🤷‍♂️🛰🌚😳
